The Amazon’s fringe
The Maranhão State’s marshland was a land ignored for centuries, due to its unusual Amazon landscape, which on the last years has suffering a huge environmental impact because of the Amazon’s economic development.
Everything started in the 60’s with the implementation of the buffalo creation industry. Along the decades, the traditional communities lost their territories for the ranchers due to the land grabbing. In 2017 the Akroá-Gamella, an almost extinguished local indigenous group, was violently attacked by a group of gunmen. Demanding for their original territory nearby the city of Viana, they are seen as a threat by the local citizens and ranchers.
